    I really like Duolingo and I think it’s a really fun and cool way to learn. But I also feel that there is some things that Duolingo can improve on such as I think there should be more rewards for streaks society and I also feel like they should find another way to like make people want to keep their streak like rewards and stuff like that, but what I do like about Duolingo is that it helps you like improve on what you don’t know about that language and it helps you learn at a slow pace if you’re a slow learner and it does reviews of things you don’t know or have fully mastered and that’s all thank you for reading and I hope Duolingo reads it so that they can improve on these things and I really just want them to give more rewards for streaks society because there’s only like three rewards.

    I understand that learning a new language requires consistent practice, but having to worry about daily priorities along with keeping a stupid streak is annoying. At that point you might as well just go learn the language with another service. The emails and notifications become bothersome after a while. I struggle with motivation often and the reminders from Lily (purple haired girl) are really negative. I decided to delete my data after I received a notification telling me to practice German along with "Or don't. I don't care." Duolingo does not know everyone they send these messages to. Learning a new language is a CHALLENGE. It should not be challenge to want to practice a language of your choosing, but these messages are UNMOTIVATING. This was after I lost my 59 day streak. I felt bad when they notified me that the app icon changed (to a sad icon? seriously?) and nearly deleted my data (as I mentioned earlier, I just did). I didn't even feel like I was learning much. They would ask me how letters are pronounced and the knowledge never stuck even when I got the questions right. Asking me to assume how something sounds is not going to help me understand the language better. And telling me every single day to practice even when I have assignments due at 11:59 PM is not going to motivate me, but make me feel worse. This app was helpful, but not that helpful. Oh, and get rid of Lily or make her more positive!🙁

    Very frustrating. I’m trying to learn Mandarin with this app. It was going fine until they made an update that put a ton of words in the lessons that I don’t know. I can learn the words taught in the lessons but it is incredibly frustrating and discouraging to have so much vocabulary included that I have no idea what they mean. They said they matched the progress so it is in the same place but that is not true at all… Also very frustrating that the steak always resets at midnight. I usually do the lessons at night so it’s very annoying I miss a lot of days on the streak

    Duolingo should be seen as a good way to practice basic words and sentences. For reference, I have recently been practicing Mandarin for an English native. Pros: 1-multiple repetition lessons to solidify words with their translations 2-audio translations and ability to tap each word to see its translation. This helps a lot for figuring out some words and phrases 3-ranking structures for different levels of users. The app will put you in a “league” and will move you up, keep you there, or demote you to a lower league based on your weekly performance. It’s a good way to stimulate competition and keep you taking lessons in the app Cons: 1-the app promotes speedy learning and sometimes that can make a person breeze through lessons without spending more time on them. I for one have not focused on the symbols related to each word. Instead I have focused on the pin yin (how word sounds in English letter) versus the symbols of modern mandarin language. I utilize this app mostly for speaking and listening. 2-the app has an alphabet and sound structure in it, but doesn’t teach it directly. It’s more of an “on-your-own” style and I think the alphabet and tones are extremely important to focus on initially. 3-the variety of words learned for each unit and is very limited. I am not sure if future lessons expand on these areas. For instance, I learned 5-8 words for food and drink itself and another 4-5 connecting words. I felt there should be more to build my vocabulary before moving to an entirely different group of words, like professions. Overall it’s a great, simple app to practice speaking and listening. The app also has the ability for you to focus on the written aspect. I would suggest using other sources to improve your vocabulary library and use the app as a baseline for the structure of those sentences.
